Update your home without draining your bank account

Something a bit different…

Recently, we were asked to contribute a piece to a real estate publication. They wanted some tips on how to make a new house feel like home. New home owners often face spaces that don’t reflect them and their lifestyle, whether is it an outdated home that feels overwhelming to change or a new build that feels impersonal and stark. The question posed to us was what are some budget-friendly ideas on making these spaces reflect their owners.

These suggestions would work for anyone who wants to change up their interior spaces regardless of how long they have lived in their home. So we thought we would share this article with you, just in case you are one of those people.

Hope you enjoy!

Change up your light fixtures

Lighting can add a lot of personality and dimension to your home. They are also relatively easy to update compared to other items such as flooring, tile, etc. There are so many great options these days for unique lighting across all styles. Whether you want to make a big statement with an oversized chandelier or keep it simple with beautiful wall sconces. You don’t have to change all the fixtures just a few changes can make a big impact.

Say no to furniture sets

Rooms that have a collected curated look are far more interesting than those filled with purchased sets. However, you do want to bring in some repetition or common ground in order for your space to be cohesive. A rug that pulls together your furniture colours is a great option. Similar wood tones will also work even throw pillows that repeat a common pattern or colour can do the job.

Use mirrors to help you out

Never underestimate the power of a good mirror. Mirrors come in so many different styles and sizes, there is something out there for everyone!. They can make a small space feel bigger, bring light to a darker area, stand in for art and, of course, they are practical as well. Mirrors are also easily moveable which offers flexibility as you curate your home.

Show your style in the powder room

The powder room is a great place to have some fun. These small spaces often get overlooked. By adding some great art, wallpaper or your favorite paint colour you can transform this space from just average to a real show stopper. Also as this room is usual small, you can make changes here that are not cost prohibitive.

Don’t forget about plants

Many of our clients want their interiors to have a natural organic element. Plants are a great way to add that feeling without breaking the bank. Have fun with your plant decor. Multiple hanging pots can make a great statement, oversized plants add drama to a space, and a grouping of succulents adds interest to any area.

Take your time

Don’t feel like everything has to be perfect right away. Often, the most interesting interior spaces are ones that have taken time to develop. Give yourself a chance to find out how you use (or want to use) the spaces in your home and also the chance to find those special items that you really love.
